Security Researcher Discovers Twenty Two Cryptocurrency Stealing Google Chrome Extensions

A security researcher divulged twenty-two Google Chrome extensions that were being used for stealing digital assets of the users.

Naked Security, a cybersecurity focused news outlet reported on Friday that Harry Denley, a security researcher specializing in virtual currencies, discovered the aforementioned malicious browser extensions. The extensions he discovered imitated several established cryptocurrency firms like MetaMask, Ledger, Jaxx, and KeepKey. The primary objective of the aforementioned extensions is to trick the users into disclosing their IDs required to enter their crypto wallets.

At the time of reporting, the majority of the phishing extensions have already been taken down. According to the report, most were down in a span of twenty-four hours of Denley divulging them.

Google Chrome’s extensions store seems to be a key region of emphasis for cyber offenders looking to snip digital currencies. It is to be noted that Google managers changed the rules governing the publication of Chrome extensions, at the end of April. Notably, the rules were altered in an attempt to make it hard for fraudsters to proliferate malicious code.
