Speaking at the CoinGeek Conference in London, Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia mentioned that he has not witnessed a solo pragmatic use-case of virtual currencies to persuade him to integrate tokens or the blockchain tech into the platform.
He further added that cryptocurrencies would not add anything utilitarian to the platform. He is of the opinion that it would prove inimical to the platform’s vision. He added that the aforementioned step, if taken, can vandalize the distinctive way in which Wikipedia operates, in the long run.
It is to be noted that Jimmy Wales was speaking opposite to Craig Wright, the self proclaimed Bitcoin founder. Wales mentioned that he attempted to differentiate between the heuristic and ideological essence of virtual currencies. The Wikipedia founder has already turned down recommendation from proponents, who asked him to give thought to enabling platform users to directly tip content creators with cryptocurrencies.
In particular, Wikipedia counts on volunteers to add and edit new content. Apart form that, they are also relied upon to examine certitude and take out erroneous or irrelevant content.
Wales mentioned,
”By integrating cryptocurrencies, Wikipedia would be taking a step back by making it easier for people and companies to pay for the content they want on the platform”.
What is your point of view regarding the integration of cryptocurrencies in widely popular platforms like Wikipedia? As per your opinion, would it harm or support the platform in the long run?
