Hackers are purportedly selling the personal data of more than a million Russians who voted online using blockchain technology, during the latest constitutional modification procedure.
According to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, the data is put on sale for 1.50 USD each on the online forums. The data comprises passport numbers, and has petite worth on its own, the unidentified sellers acknowledged to Kommersant.
The press office of Moscow’s Department of Information Technologies, which is responsible for the design of the voting system, mentioned,
“The department is regularly monitoring the internet for publications of such data, including the darknet. The database mentioned in the publication has nothing to do with the list of voters who registered to vote online.”
It is to be noted that the online voting was a part of countrywide voting dedicated to the modifications to the Russian constitution, which, among other things, eliminated the 2-term ceiling for presidents, effectively permitting Putin to stay in power longer.
