Coming as positive step towards adoption of sports betting, a bill to modify the constitution of US state of South Dakota in order to allow sports betting has been accepted in the state senate.
The aforementioned bill was presented by state senator Bob Ewing. It was passed by the local government committee on February 7 before getting approved in the senate on February 11.
It is to be noted that the state constitution of South Dakota presently proscribes gambling, except for craps, roulette, keno, and slot machines, as long as they are conducted within the city confines of Deadwood, a town in South Dakota. Senator Ewing’s constituency consist of the city of Deadwood, which is a city in and county seat of Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States.
Under the new constitutional modification, sports betting would also be permissible. However, it will be permissible only within the boundaries of Deadwood.
Funds obtained from legal sports betting would allegedly go towards the historic renovation and safeguarding of Deadwood.
The bill to revise the constitution did not provide any additional specifics regarding the regulation of sports betting in South Dakota if legalized.
