Bitcoin Exchanges Help Prevent Five Million USD Online Bank Robbery In Brazil

Recently, a five million USD online robbery took place in Brazil attacking Banco Santander, a Spanish multinational financial institution. The heist was forestalled after the funds were detained with the help of local OTC Bitcoin exchanges.

The criminals instantly moved to convert the whipped money into Bitcoin. Nonetheless, the cash prompted several bank accounts of the cryptocurrency exchanges to be frozen, as per local media outlet The Bitcoin Portal.

The local media outlet mentions that it obtained internal documents from Banco Santander specifying an enquiry into the episode, divulging that the bank is not sure as to precisely how the capital was whipped.

Last month, the bank recognized certain indiscretions in the accounts of Gerdau, a local steel manufacturer. The irregularities consisted of eleven doubtful transactions totaling five million USD. Subsequently, a police report was filed on 20th April, requesting to start an investigation into the robbery.

The stolen money was transferred to the bank accounts of 4 over-the-counter BTC exchanges. The Bitcoin Portal report indicated that 8 individuals were involved in the case and the bank accounts of the crypto exchanges receiving the capital were frozen.
